Acorn Speech and Language Therapy (SLT) is an independent Speech and Language Therapy service focusing on the needs of children and young people with complex needs, speech sound disorders and delays, language disorders, Autism, Down's Syndrome and feeding difficulties.   Acorn SLT was set up Emily Alton in March 2019.​ Emily began her SLT career working for ARCOS (Association for Rehabilitation of Communication and Oral Skills). In 2013 she began working within the NHS where she developed her skills as a Specialist and Highly Specialist Speech and Language Therapist. Emily has extensive experience of working with children and young people aged 12 months to 16 years old across early years, primary schools, special schools and secondary school educational settings. Emily specialises in early childhood language development, autism and complex needs. Emily predominantly works with pre-school and primary school-aged children to develop their attention and listening, language, speech and social communication skills. ​Emily is a Makaton Tutor and is trained in infant and paediatric dysphagia management, Attention Autism, PECS,  Colourful Semantics, Palin Parent Child Interaction Therapy, VERVE, Solution Focused Brief Therapy and SCERTS.​ Emily is available to provide advice, initial assessments, EHCP reports and therapy via telephone consultation, home visits, or at your child’s educational or leisure setting. Please get in touch to find out her current availability.  Emily is also available to provide training packages for nurseries, schools and leisure settings.​​​

Education 

Bachelor's Degree in Linguistics and Phonetics

2007- 2010

Emily studied Linguistics and Phonetics at the University of Leeds for her undergraduate degree. Whilst studying for this degree she worked as a Teaching Assistant in a special school for Autistic children . Her undergraduate dissertation investigated the linguistic uses of echolalia in school-aged children with Autism.

Master's Degree in Speech and Language Therapy

2010 - 2012

Emily graduated with an MSc in Speech and Language Therapy in 2012 from City University, London.

Professional memberships and accreditations

Emily is a member of the RCSLT (Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists) and ASLTiP (Association of Independent Speech and Language Therapists in Independent Practice). She is registered with HCPC (Health and Care Professions Council) and as an ICO officer.
